CRB Checks

It is the legal duty of an organisation to carry out CRB Checks on all staff, volunteers and management committee members who work with children or vulnerable adults. For further information please click on the following Information Sheet from Newcastle Council for Voluntary Service

CRB Information Sheet

Charities that work with children or vulnerable adults must now provide the Charity Commission with a signed declaration that they have carried out Criminal Record Bureau checks on prospective trustees. Details are on the Charity Commission website. It is also against the law for anyone to act as a trustee of a "children's charity" as defined in the Protection of Children Act 1999 unless a CRB check has been carried out. Trustees who fail to carry out such checks on new trustees or staff could themselves be in breach of their duty of care to the charity.

Guidance on CRB Checks for Volunteers - Guidance from the Office of the Third Sector to help organisations be clear about when they do and don’t need to carry out Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) checks on volunteers. The guidance will help cut unnecessary red tape and responds to concerns that potential volunteers can be put off if they are asked to undergo a CRB check without good reason. You can access the guidance and find further information on the OTS website.
