Children & Young People

Parents as Partners - part of the Barnardo's TLC Programme. Designed to support Early Years Foundation Stage standards, the course gives practical ideas to engage parents in your setting. Attendees will learn techniques to encourage parents to share in their child’s learning in the setting and the home. Increase your knowledge of the principles of effective parent partnership and learn of the  barriers facing some parents. Sexual Health Training - free to anyone working with young people in Bath & North East Somerset. Training Booklet.

Safe and Sound – an introduction to basic safeguarding. This training is designed for anyone who has contact with children within their working environment. Participants will gain a thorough understanding of how to provide a safe setting for children and how to recognise and respond to abuse. The Sexual Exploitation of Children and the Internet - one day training course. The growth of social networking sites has provided paedophiles with previously unheard of opportunities to groom children for sexual exploitation. This training offers key information to those who work with children and have responsibilies regarding their safety.The course trainers have a background in child protection and have investigated this kind of exploitation. The Freedom Programme - 16th/17th September 2008 (Swindon) The Freedom Programme was devised in response to the need for an effective model to work with victims/survivors of domestic abuse. The aim is to provide an opportunity for women to develop ways of thinking and behaving to protect themselves, their children and others from harm and to provide them with the knowledge they need to achieve this goal. The Training is intended to impart knowledge and skills to participants to enable them to facilitate Freedom Programme groups or to work with women on a one-to-one basis. Details.

Is Your Club Child-Safe? Child protection seminar - Wed 17 September Child-Safe is a registered international children and young person's charity involved in travel, sport, community groups and specific school programmes. The Child-Safe initiative in Bath & NE Somerset is about empowering young people, improving care and reducing opportunities of abuse in its widest sense. Anyone attending a Child-safe seminar will receive an Information and Resource pack that will enable them to develop and implement an effective child protection scheme. The seminar will be held in the Somerdale Room at Frys Club in Keynsham from 18.30pm to 20.00pm. Working With People Who Self Injure - Bristol Crisis Service for Women Training Day
Monday 22 September/Friday 26 September 2008.  Why do people self-injure? What are their needs? What issues does self-injury raise for workers? Responding helpfully.

Helping the Young back to the Land: an opportunity to explore ways of working with teenagers on the land. This training for adults will be offered in Wiltshire (Oct 08 - April 09) by Circle of Life Rediscovery. The training, comprising three weekends and a four day module was devised by Annie Spencer who developed the programme after working in Romania with adolescents about to leave their orphanage. There she learnt how transforming time spent in nature can be for disturbed and angry young men and has since developed her work with young people both here and in the States for the past five years. Cost: £1050. This includes all teaching, accommodation and food. Details.

Funding

ACEVO SOUTH WEST SEMINARS 2007 - 2008 - Bristol based seminars aimed at Chief Officers. Details.

Effective Voluntary Sector Management - New Online Course aimed at people who have recently joined the voluntary sector. Volunteers and trustees can also benefit from this course. The online course is run by Working for a Charity, a project within NCVO and part of the UK Workforce Hub and is accredited by Roehampton University. The 2008 course started in February and has now closed but, to find out details of the next course in 2009 click here.

Regional Leadership & Governance Forums 2008 -The Third Sector Leadership Centre is working in partnership with the Governance Hub and Regional Networks to organise a series of Regional Leadership and Governance Forums. The forums are aimed at leaders in the sector who are at Chief Officer/Director level, along with their Chairs and trustees. Find out more about the forum in your region (remaining dates in July). Free Starting in Social Enterprise Workshops - If you are in the early stages of setting up social enterprise business, or if you have an idea that could benefit your community and don't know where to start, this series of workshops are designed to help you explore how this could happen.  Arthritis Care Challenging Pain Course - Arthritis Care is a national charity with local links. They can offer a new intervention for any people who have long term pain. It is a two session workshop delivered over two consecutive weeks. They have evidence from their research that shows that even 12 months after attending the course people are still finding what they learnt is helping them. This new course is called “Challenging Pain”, and Arthritis Care runs these courses locally. They are free to the people who attend. Time for Action – Elder Abuse Training A cascade training course developed by Action on Elder Abuse which helps organisations to acquire the skills and materials needed to train all their own staff and volunteers in awareness and understanding of elder abuse. Delegates are sent briefing notes before the course to help them prepare. Comic Relief has provided a bursary fund so that voluntary organisations can receive the full day training from as little as £25. Regional dates through the year. Details on AEA website.

Understanding Health Improvement (Royal Institute of Public Health Level 2) - The Health Improvement Team (Public Health Workforce Development) are introducing regular training to allow staff to motivate and support individuals to adopt a healthier lifestyle. The RIPH Level 2 award provides an introduction to the fundamentals of health and well-being, of barriers to making a change to lifestyle and of how to help people to make changes to improve their health. Staff Development

Summer Training for Development Workers - see the latest edition of SKILDbites.
 

The Certificate in Interpersonal Skills for Volunteers, This free distance learning training course run by the University of Wales, Lampeter has helped hundreds of people over the years improve their interpersonal skills. At the moment the course is available free of charge for UK and EU residents who do not hold (and are not currently studying for) a degree or higher qualification. The course is part-time distance learning with no exams. There are monthly start dates and tutor support. The course is fully accredited by the University of Wales and can lead to a BA Degree in Voluntary Sector Studies. Working For A Charity's Effective Voluntary Sector Management - online course starting Oct 2008. This course is aimed at people who have recently joined the voluntary sector or who wish to make a career move into it. Volunteers and trustees can also benefit. The course covers seven units:
Introduction to the voluntary sector, Marketing and communications, Fundraising, Employment, Volunteering, Financial management and Governance. The course is accredited by Roehampton University and the online element will provide 10 credits at HE level 1.
